@JOHN BARRICK

@JOHN BARRICK

@Buncol

@Toli

A whole system of deputies was established after Eto'o had Song banned to keep him as far from the captaincy as possible if he ever returned but that needs over-turned now and to recognise that he should succeed Eto'o whose on-field leadership (which usually involves agreeing with and making friends of the opposition players) makes Henry seem a fantastic captain.
The meal example is one that lend credence to Song's story he was acting on the teams behalf because he actually urged his team mates not to start the meal before Eto'o arrived, it was by all accounts Emana that got up first to fill his plate, it had been tradition that no-one start before the captain arrived but in Rigo's day he was not prone to keep them waiting.

Song was more concerned about Eo'o not wishing to travel on the team bus and thing like that but I suppose Eto'o would argue that being an international personallity he has commitments and therefore should be allowed to join the squad latter or skip the odd practice. I'm an Arsenal fan but I'm not saying the right is all with Song, he was angry in the manner Rigo was displaced and he obviously felt he was the real team leader but he spectacularly misread how Le Guen would react.

The whole hierarchy in Cameroonian football can be very complex and the organisation of the national team has in the past been chaotic but seems to be improving, if I described some of the circular routes they used to travel to games to keep travel costs down you would say I was lying but at least that and other logistics are improving.

Song is the natural captain but he should have bided his time until Eto'o retired and when he saw the likes of Milla come over to Eto'o he should have kept his mouth shut, now with Eto'o suspended his power is obviously waining, sometimes you have to pick your fights.

In the build up to the last World Cup, Alex Song approached the coach, Le Guen he said on behalf of his team mates to complain about the leadership, or rather lack of it, provided by Eto'o who was given not to travel with the other players, expect them not to start meals until he came down etc.

The team split into factions, Alex Song had been seen as the natural team leader on the pitch and the next captain in waiting and might have expected more of his team mates to strongly back him but in the event a number including his good friend, Mbia drew back fearing for their places when it became such an open conflict and Le Guen completely backed his captain.

In his time at Rangers, Le Guen attacked an over powerful captain and personality and came out on the losing side, when he took over Cameroon he backed the most powerful man in Cameroon football, Eto'o taking the captaincy away from Rigo Song and giving it to him.

After Alex Song had spoken with Le Guen he was dropped for the final friendly before the tournament and also dropped for the disasterous opening match against Japan. He was restored for the second game against Denmark which Cameroon should have won, they dominated the game but conceeded two poor goals, however Alex Song was only re-instated because of the a delegation arriving from Cameroon. Song was injured in the warm-up to the final game and replaced at the last minute.

After the tournament Eto'o exerted his power and had Alex and two other senior players 'banned' from the team. That led to a disasterous Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, history should have told them what happens when Alex Song is unavailable because when FIFA effectively banned him for a year from international football during the world cup qualifying Cameroon found themselves bottom of their final grouped though qualified easily when Song returned and they won the final four group games.

It was Alex Song who was named to consecutive CAF XIs at National Cup finals, Eto'o was not choosen in either the Ghana or Angola finals, for all he has acheived in club football, Alex Song has outshone him internationally when available.

Just when it seemed the two had managed to bury the hatchet without it ending up the back of either's head the players strike now sees Eto'o unavailable. The truth is Cameroon needs both and when they have played together since Song's return they have shown the can link up well together, both need to put their egos aside.

(...) Cameroon really shouldn't have any problems overcoming Guinea-Bissau, ranked 166 in the world by Fifa, in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Wednesday, but the issue is what on earth they are doing playing at this stage in the first place.
They joined 26 other teams who had failed to qualify for this year's Cup of Nations (including Nigeria and Egypt) and they play each other in two-leg play-offs, the first on Wednesday, then the second in June. The winners then meet the 16 sides who made it to this year's Cup of Nations, the winners of those games going through to South Africa.

That means that even if Cameroon beat Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria beat Rwanda, they could end up facing Zambia, Ivory Coast or Ghana for a place in the finals.
That has prompted serious soul-searching in Cameroon(...)
Jules Nyonga is one of the most respected coaches in Cameroon, having worked with the national team as either assistant or manager between 1984 and 1996, as well as qualifying them for the 2006 Cup of Nations in Egypt: "There is a stark difference between the time when [Rigobert] Song was captain and now," he said. "He knew how to rally the team. He wasn't condescending. He considered himself part of the team, which Eto'o does not. He is a crushing personality, because of his wealth and international standing."
One specific example stands out. "He came down from his room for breakfast," Nyonga said, "and found some young players who had just been drafted into the national team and said to them: 'Petits, did you sleep well?' He was very condescending and that reveals his state of mind. And that's irritating to other members of the national team, who may not be as rich as Eto'o – Alexandre Song and Achille Emana especially found it irritating; they found it unacceptable and could not tolerate it because they deserve some amount of respect."

"They felt Eto'o should not be able to give them lessons in conduct. And then there were matches when Eto'o would give his team-mates a bonus from his own pocket then look down on his team-mates. There were problems with the way Eto'o spoke, referring to 'my people' and 'my team'. Many thought it was extremely arrogant(...)"
