In the build up to the last World Cup, Alex Song approached the coach, Le Guen he said on behalf of his team mates to complain about the leadership, or rather lack of it, provided by Eto'o who was given not to travel with the other players, expect them not to start meals until he came down etc.

The team split into factions, Alex Song had been seen as the natural team leader on the pitch and the next captain in waiting and might have expected more of his team mates to strongly back him but in the event a number including his good friend, Mbia drew back fearing for their places when it became such an open conflict and Le Guen completely backed his captain.

In his time at Rangers, Le Guen attacked an over powerful captain and personality and came out on the losing side, when he took over Cameroon he backed the most powerful man in Cameroon football, Eto'o taking the captaincy away from Rigo Song and giving it to him.

After Alex Song had spoken with Le Guen he was dropped for the final friendly before the tournament and also dropped for the disasterous opening match against Japan. He was restored for the second game against Denmark which Cameroon should have won, they dominated the game but conceeded two poor goals, however Alex Song was only re-instated because of the a delegation arriving from Cameroon. Song was injured in the warm-up to the final game and replaced at the last minute.

After the tournament Eto'o exerted his power and had Alex and two other senior players 'banned' from the team. That led to a disasterous Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, history should have told them what happens when Alex Song is unavailable because when FIFA effectively banned him for a year from international football during the world cup qualifying Cameroon found themselves bottom of their final grouped though qualified easily when Song returned and they won the final four group games.

It was Alex Song who was named to consecutive CAF XIs at National Cup finals, Eto'o was not choosen in either the Ghana or Angola finals, for all he has acheived in club football, Alex Song has outshone him internationally when available.

Just when it seemed the two had managed to bury the hatchet without it ending up the back of either's head the players strike now sees Eto'o unavailable. The truth is Cameroon needs both and when they have played together since Song's return they have shown the can link up well together, both need to put their egos aside.

A whole system of deputies was established after Eto
