As local soccer fans were still mourning the Malawi Under-17 team’s exit from the Caf Under-17 tournament, another disaster struck on Saturday at Silver Stadium where the Malawi Under-20 side crashed out of the Caf Youth Championship after going down 2-0 to visiting Cameroon.
The result earned the young Indomitable Lions qualification for Congo 2007 on a 4-0 aggregate. They won the first leg in Yaounde by the same margin.
The two teams played a 0-0 first half but the visitors were on target just two minutes into the last half when Leonily Kweuke, the tallest man on the field, fired home from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Goalkeeper Vincent Gona should shoulder the blame for the goal which he could have prevented had he been more composed.
Malawi nearly pulled level midway into the second half after some heavy pressure on the Lions goal but Chikondi Likwemba’s first time shot from a set piece by captain Peter Wadabwa was blocked by a Cameroon defender.
As the hosts were hoping for an equaliser, substitute Bile Moukandjo, who went in for Kweuke, got the second for Cameroon after disposing off defender Chipiliro Jose.
The Malawian player was playing with an injury after coach John Kaputa had exhausted his three substitutions.
The coach John Kaputa had pushed in Joel Chipofya and Thokozani Chimwala for Gerald Chimbaka and Victor Nyirenda before taking out Chiukepo Msowoya, who was playing with a bandaged head following a head collision with a Cameroon player in the first half.
Speaking after the match Kaputa said both goals would have been avoided had it not been for goalkeeping and defensive errors.
“The first goal was a goalkeeper’s problem. He (Gona) was not supposed to dive. He could have just grabbed the ball. The second goal was a defensive error.
“On the technical aspect, our passes were not good. Cameroon were playing long balls and we had told the boys not to follow Cameroon’s pattern of play,†he said.
Last week the Malawi Under-17 was crashed 2-0 by Mali in a return leg at Nankhaka Ground. The first leg ended 3-0 in favour of Mali.
