Samuel Eto'o insisted to reporters at the Nou camp today that he's still determined to win the pichichi award, but admitted that the most important thing was the league title the team have won.
Eto'o explained: "I enjoy setting myself targets" and though he stressed that he wasn't obsessed about the situation he did admit that he'd perhaps been too over concerned with scoring against Villarreal and he'd be trying to just play his normal game this weekend. Finally, the Cameroon striker repeated that the award was just an extra in a season thatd been so successful for the team as a whole.
Below are extracts from Eto's press conference:
You seemed to be pretty nervous in your desire to score against Villarreal.
"That's right. I actually think that meant I didn't play my usual game and so I didn't score. I went out with the idea in my head that I just had to get a goal and that's not my way of playing it was as if the result wasn't important. I just have to be myself and play my normal game. When I first came here I certainly didn't expect to be the league's leading scorer, but I stuck at it and that's where I am now. Even if I do finally take the award, the most important thing has to have been the team winning the league. Everything else is just an extra and if I don't score the most this season, I'll be there again next year trying to get as many goals as I can to bring success to the team and maybe win two titles. If I can also win an individual award, then so much the better".
So we'll see a different Eto'o this weekend ?
"You'll see me playing as I have done all season I made a mistake in my hunger to score last week if the team as a whole functions, then I'll get my chances".
Do you see Forlán as the main threat?
"I've done my job and what I wanted to help the team do well, which we've done winning the league. Being the leading scorer is just an add on if I can do it , it's good for me and the team, but I try not to see other players as threats".
Don't you think you're setting yourself goals which are too high for next season?
"I've always been a goalscorer I got lots at Mallorca too. I enjoy setting myself targets and the harder the better. I just want to go into next season with the same hunger to improve on this year. If I don't make it , it won't be for want of trying. I want the league title again and if possible the Champions title too. I know that I just have to play in one of those big finals".
Your representative was quoted this week as saying you've become a different player this season and as such you deserve an improved contract. Do you agree?
"He can say what he likes it's not him who pays me! I think we all deserve the bonus we're getting for winning the league. For myself, I always said that first I had to play and show what I could do, then we'd see what sort of wage I should get. I think I've done my part alright".
Your representative also said he thought the club paid more for you than you were worth
"Well, I don't know about that, but I am sure that they'd get more if they sold me now than they had to pay a year ago".
If Mallorca escape the drop at the weekend, that'll be the icing on the cake for you, won't it?
"It certainly will. The only game I'll have eyes for on Sunday is Villarreal-Levante".
