Gordon Igesund has confirmed to Football365.co.za that he is in the running to become Cameroon’s new coach.
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns boss has emerged as the favourite to succeed Paul Le Guen in the Indomitable Lions hotseat.
He is up against German Klaus Toppmöller, who led Bayer Leverkusen to the Champions League final in 2002.
Igesund was identified by the Cameroon football authorities and was asked to submit his CV. The decorated coach, who has lifted four Premier Soccer League titles with four different clubs, has largely been overlooked for the Bafana Bafana post.
He is delighted to finally receive recognition from elsewhere on the continent and believes Gavin Hunt, who turned down the chance to coach Zambia, also needs to be given credit in South Africa.
« I don’t know if the other African countries are approaching Gavin and I because we have not been considered for the Bafana job, but it feels good to get recognition.
« Cameroon approached me and are interested in my CV. I expect a call in the next few days with their decision. It is sad that Gavin and I haven’t been truly recognised in South Africa, because it is not easy to win the championship.
