After reading His Excellency’s diatribe on this page, those who have known him in his glory days would tell you that, in his case, what goes around, comes around. And thank God for that! Roger Milla, the best I have seen on a football pitch in this country, has never been known either to acknowledge the assistance of his teammates to his personal success on the pitch or to work openly for the advancement of the game, free from the despicable stance of constantly putting people down to raise his own stature.
I grew up around him. I am still in awe in front of him. But I have come to loathe and despise this constant search for recognition. Roger Milla has never accepted the fact that he is no more front and centre in Cameroon football. From Lechantre to the Pfister’s era, the action of our aging hero has been at times despicable.
His words have raised an eyebrow in every quarter. Just imagine our only recognizable icon freely telling us that we went to the final in Accra because he personally picked the team after the first game we lost. Our Roger being concerned that somebody, some day, might duplicate his famous dance! Our Roger stooping this low!
Does this man ever think? Couldn’t he have waited a few weeks before talking?
Well, if you know him, you know he could not wait, because he cannot stand being ignored. And when things go well, as is now the case on the football front, people tend to forget Roger Milla. Because of his ludicrous ideas and warped ego, Roger Milla is becoming irrelevant. This is intolerable to His Excellency.
The problem Roger Milla is facing was created by him. He is now on the verge of oblivion, and he has only himself to blame. He has alienated most of his former teammates and football associates. Now, they are giving him a taste of his own medicine. For His Excellency, the proverbial chicken is really coming home to roost. It is terrifying.
