The Confederation of African football sharply criticises a gathering in Libya of countries loyal to Fifa president Sepp Blatter.
Caf has slammed a meeting in Libya in support of incumbent Fifa president Sepp Blatter.
Claiming it was held to destabilise the Issa Hayatou’s challenge, Caf says the weekend’s meeting was a failure.
Organisers said that representatives of 23 African federations were present at the gathering in Tripoli, which was hosted by the Libyan FA boss Saadi Ghaddafi.
The LFA’s secretary-general Abdelraouf Sirri said: « There was a consensus among the participants that they would vote for Blatter. Only Chad are undecided. »
But Caf said only ten countries were represented, mostly by non-decision making administrators.
Liberia’s FA boss Edwin Snowe, who is heading the African campaign against Hayatou’s candidature, was among the delegates.
90% support
Caf was scathing in it assessment of the Libyan FAs claims of support for Blatter.
A Caf statement said: « Most of the countries mentioned in the final communiqué of the Libyan FA have confirmed their unconditional support to the candidature of Issa Hayatou.
« The chairman of the Ghanaian FA, present in Tripoli, has even sent written support to the Caf president.
« As he had announced in a press conference in Paris last week, Mr. Hayatou will have the support of at least 45 out of the 50 African countries voting in the May 29th Fifa presidency elections. »
