Ghanaian Family Renews Claims For Eto’o
Two days after losing to Egypt in the Nations Cup finals in Accra, Camerounian arrowhead and the tournament’s goalking, Samuel Eto’o, is confronted with yet another gruelling puzzle as to who his father really is.
Eto’o’s true paternity has become an issue over the years following the player’s alleged confession that he did not know his father.
But even before the player’s emotional outpour, the Eto family (Eto - meaning the ear in Ewe) at Sovie Avenu near Kpando in the Volta Region has always claimed relationship to the three-time African Footballer of the year on the grounds that one of their own, Simon Komla Eto, had a child with a Camerounian woman in 1982 but nothing was heard of him (Simon) until his demise later.
Graphic Sports investigations aided by one Dan Dzide, a native of the Volta Region and a freelance journalist, and a supposed relation of Eto’o, Mary Merlomey, a staff of the Graphic Communications Group Limited gave traces of a likely linkage between Samuel Eto’o and the Etos in Ghana.
Elizabeth Afoa Eto, 58, a sister of the supposed father of Samuel, who gave the chronology of the family history said her brother, Simon, died when Eto was just two years and believed the mother may not have told the Barcelona star of his Ghanaian paternity.
