Police detained the head of French oil group Total for questioning on Wednesday over suspected corruption by the multinational giant to win a gas contract in Iran. The judicial move against chief executive Christophe de Margerie is the second to target him over dealings in the Middle East, but the company insisted that its handling of the Iranian contract had been entirely legal. But, contrary to earlier indications, Margerie would not be questioned over suspected corruption related to Cameroon, the source said. Investigators were looking into suspicious activity on an account held by a Cameroon official in France.Earlier, the regional newspaper Est Republicain had reported that Margerie would be questioned about the contract in Iran. It also referred to an enquiry begun on January 8 into suspected "corruption of foreign agents" over the production and marketing of oil from Cameroon. France24
