Samuel Eto'o has scored 50 goals in two seasons, something no player has achieved since the 90-91 season. There can be no doubting that the Cameroonian is one of the best strikers the Spanish league has ever seen.
Eto'o has equalled the tally set by Mexican Hugo Sánchez, who scored 38 goals for Real Madrid in 89-90 and 12 more the season after. In an amazing year, Eto'o has won the League, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, was top scorer in the league, the third best player in the world according to FIFA, and the African Player of the Year.
Beating his personal bests
Eto'o came to Barça from Mallorca in the summer of 2004, having scored 17 goals for the Balearic Islanders. In his first year in Catalonia, he scored 24, going two better this year with 26. He becomes the first African to top the Spanish scoring charts and the ninth in Barcelona's history.
Important goals
And some of Eto'o's goals have proved fundamental in such a successful season for the club. These have included decisive strikes at the Bernabéu, Stamford Bridge and, of course, Saint-Denis. In Madrid, Eto'o opened the scoring in the first half with a powerful shot that left Casillas floundering. In London, he got the winner when nodding home a Rafa Márquez cross. And in Paris, he scored his most important goal of all in a Barcelona shirt, slotting home the equaliser against Arsenal from a Larsson assist.
Not at the World Cup
So much success as club level has gone a long way to making up for the fact that Samuel will not be going to the World Cup in Germany next month. Wome's missed penalty in Egypt meant the Indomitable Lions were beaten to a finals place by the Ivory Coast, the same country that put Cameroon out of the African Nations Cup at the quarter finals stage.
