Eto’o Is King of Africa
Abuja - February 16, 2006 0
Cameroon and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has been awarded the 2005 CAF African Footballer of the Year Award.
The 25-year-old forward has won the award for the third consecutive year, and is the first to achieve such a feat.
Eto’o will receive the award in person today, after arriving in Abuja, Nigeria, yesterday on a private jet from Spain.
Eto’o, who is leading the scoring charts in the Spanish league this season, also came in third in the 2005 Fifa World Player of the Year Award.
The Cameroon marksman also top scored in the 2006 MTN Africa Cup of Nations, though this would not have counted towards his African award, as the votes had been cast before the tournament began.
The award will, however, go some way towards providing Eto’o with some consolation for his miss in an epic penalty shoot-out, that ultimately saw Cameroon beaten in the MTN Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals by Cote D’Ivoire.
