How Women, Gambling Robbed Lions Of Victory
By Innocent Mbunwe
The ouster of Cameroon at the quarterfinal phase of the African Cup of Nations football tournament in Egypt has been attributed to indiscipline and womanising in the Lions' camp.
The players reportedly spent most of the night prior to their game with the Ivory Coast boys gambling.
The Post traced this state of affairs to the absence of supervision and monitoring by the technical staff, which allowed the players to relocate their girlfriends into the Hilton Pyramid Hotel, in which they were lodged.
And so, despite the team's 100 percent record in the first round of the competition, they lost steam and serenity and were shown the door prematurely.
The Post learnt that on the eve of the quarterfinal clash against Ivory Coast, the technical staff failed to ensure the discipline and serenity that had hitherto reigned in the Lions' den.
Players were left that night to gamble in their room till the wee hours of the morning with some key players parting with as much as FCFA 17 million. (27.000 euros) in this game of chance, hence their shoddy performance on the day of the match.
One other factor was the disparity of match bonuses to the technical staff, which also was an element of discord.
While the players received FCFA 15 million as participation fee and FCFA 5 million for each match won, (which summed up to FCFA 30 million after three matches) this was not the case with the technical and other support staff.
Whereas the head coach, Artur Jorge, had something below this amount, the team doctors and other staff received far less. This led to a build-up of an uneasy atmosphere, triggered by the head of the Cameroon's delegation to Egypt
