Cameroon defender Thimothee Atouba has opted out of playing for his country at the African Nations Cup in Egypt later this month.
The 23-year-old, who plays for the German side Hamburg, has turned down the call-up from Indomitable Lions coach, Artur Jorge, because he is not sure a first team place.
"Atouba tried to get in touch with the national team coach to guarantee him first team place but the coach could not be reached," said Marco Anfpreikfch, a spokesman for Hamburg told BBC Sport on Monday.
"As such, he has decided not to join the Cameroon national team.
Atouba, who arrived in Germany from the English premiership outfit Tottenham last July, has opted instead to join the Bundesliga club in their training camp in Spain until the end of January.
"He will join our training camp in the Spain on Tuesday," Anfpreikfch added.
Hamburg are currently second in the German league, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
