Simbas in training ground search

The Simbas are training at a military complex in Kinshasa
The DR Congo's preparations for next year's African Cup of Nations are being hampered by the lack of a proper training ground in Kinshasa.

The Congolese officially got their preparations for Egypt 2006 underway last week when they called 28 home-based players into camp.

But the Simbas' assistant coach Joseph Mukeba has been conducting training sessions on a tennis complex used by the military.

"We're training in a military barrack because we can't find any good ground in the entire city," Mukeba told BBC Sport.

He added: "Many people are coming to watch us train and this isn't good for the players because they can't concentrate. I wish we could find a place to train in private."

Last year, fans went to a training session and attacked the national goalkeeper after accusing him of performing poorly during the World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso.

The DR Congo coach Claude Leroy, who is currently in France, has been taking the Simbas for training in his homeland citing the lack of good training grounds in Kinshasa.

The Frenchman threatened to resign ahead of the qualifier against Cape Verde in September when the team could not find a training ground.

The country's national stadium - the Stade de Martyrs - is currently undergoing refurbishment.

The lack of training facilities in Kinshasa is a problem created back in the days of former dictator Mobutu Sese Seko whose officials sold off all public areas.

Meanwhile, the Simbas' scheduled trip to Paris on 4 November to step up their preparations is in doubt after the French embassy said it would not issue visas to the players.

The French are unhappy that some of the home-based players who were granted visas in the past disappeared soon after landing in Paris.
