At a recent summit in N'Djamena, we made a presentation to Cameroonian, Gabonese, Congolese etc..stakeholders on the difficulties of building a non-existent lodging infrastructure in the region, almost like building on an island. We can't rely on existing infrastructure, city water, city power, local suppliers, contractors,law enforcement, etc their norms are just non-acceptable.
You’re building entirely self-sufficiently and the running costs are so much higher, and in addition red tape and corruption continue to be barriers to FDI in the region unlike in Kenya, Ghana or Nigeria.
The only good news are facilitation observed in certain countries (Cameroon yes..) where things are getting easier, the government starts to offer tax holidays, import duty waivers, and accelerated approvals.. Just wondering why it took them so long!!
The latest WB report which measures the ease of doing business worldwide shows that improvement as well.. Bravo!!
