Stop the nonsense on here. Stick to facts. Joel Matip has not played for Cameroon since June 2014 i.e. after the World Cup in Brazil. He obtained his contract with Liverpool in 2016. How the hell did he use Cameroon to obtain his contract and wages?
Jacques Songo'o decided against playing for Cameroon for almost two years between 95-97 citing poor managerial conditions. He was born and bred in Cameroon, had been in the national team set up since 1983. Did that make him less patriotic or less of a Cameroonian? He eventually returned, played as the main keeper in 1998 CAN and World Cup.
Patrick Mboma shied away from the national team between 1094 (after his non-selection for the World Cup) until mid to late 1996. He cited issues over mis-management and lack of objectivity in the selection processes. isn't he today a national legend and reference?
I would love to see Matip playing for Cameroon. But give the lad a break! Whatever it is that made him take the decision he took, he will take his time to digest and if he feels like coming back. He will do so. I prefer that he stays away than to come halfheartedly and cause tensions in the camp. Stop judging the patriotism of a boy who chose to play for Cameroon at the tender age of 18 when kids are still writing their GCE A levels or Bacc.
