The Fifa boss has saluted the re-election of the Fecafoot president, who is currently in detention for misappropriation of funds
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has sent a congratulatory message to the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) newly-elected president Iya Mohammed, who has been at the helm of the country’s football body since 2000.
“It is with great pleasure that I write to you today to offer my sincere congratulations on your re-election as President of the Cameroon Football Federation,†Blatter wrote.
“I am convinced that your rich experience, knowledge and personal qualities will have a significant impact on the stable development of the sport in Cameroon.â€
Blatter’s reaction comes as a huge support to Iya, who was arrested two weeks ago and currently in detention for mismanagement of funds at Sodecoton, Cameroon’s largest (partially state-owned) cotton producer, where he also worked as managing director.
Authorities say his arrest is not connected with his activities at the Fecafoot. He won last weekend’s vote in a landslide event, while behind bars, but one of his rivals has complained that some influential members of the Fecafoot took money to influence the election.
The body has opened an investigation and vowed to bring those involved to justice.
