Dar es Salam. The national team, Taifa Stars, yesterday recorded yet another impressive victory after downing pre-match favourites Cameroon 1-0 in a friendly match at the National Stadium. The victory, a huge psychological boost for Stars ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, establishes Tanzania as the giant slayers after a similar win over African champions Zambia last month.
After a host of near misses, Mbwana Samata, who plies his trade at TP Mazembe of DR Congo, planted home the solitary goal in the 89th minute. Frank Domayo beat his marker down the right flank and delivered a killer cross which the TP Mazembe man pounced past a hapless Cameroon shot stopper -- Effala Komguep.
Stars performance against the star-studded side proved that the Lions are no longer indomitable and it should have been 2-0 had it not been for Erasto Nyoni’s penalty miss in the 27th minute.
The Kim Poulsen’s boys will face Morocco’s Lions of Atlas on March 22 as they pursue a ticket to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They are placed second with three points, one adrift of leaders Cote d’Ivoire.
Stars looked dangerous in the Indomitable Lions area from the outset with Domayo, Samata and Mwinyi Kazimoto troubling the Cameroon, but the latter’s defence stood firm to clear all dangers.
Cameron’s notable attack came in the 15th minute when Aboubakar Vincent went one-on-one with Juma Kaseja, but his final shot went off target.
Stars continued to haunt the Cameroon’s defence marshaled by Assou Ekotto, but lack of precision in front of the goal denied them the lead.
Kazimoto missed a clear goal on the half hour mark with Komguep at hi mercy before Domayo’s weak shot was saved by the keeper with just a minute to the breather.
The second half started with Stars picking from where they had left, stretching the Cameroonians almost at will, but they had to wait until the 89th minute to kill the game off.
Speaking after the match, Poulsen showered praise on his players, but warned that there is a need for more improvement.
“They played very well against a team of Cameroon calibre, but there is a lot to do to reach the level I want. We have registered big wins recently, but we still have to work hard,†said the Danish coach.
His Cameroon counterpart, Jean Paul Akono conceded the defeat and congratulated Stars, saying they played well and deserved the victory.
