Middlesbrough 2-3 Sporting

Two late goals handed Middlesbrough a Uefa Cup lifeline after the first leg of their tie with Sporting Lisbon.

Joseph-Desire Job scored a brilliant overhead kick and Chris Riggott netted after Ricardo dropped the ball.

Alexandre Pedro Barbosa had scored from 18 yards before Da Silva Liedson doubled Sporting's lead with a superb header from Rodolph Douala's cross.

Mark Schwarzer spilled Hugo Viana's shot, parried Barbosa's follow up but could not thwart Douala making it 3-0.

Middlesbrough might have taken the lead in the opening minute when Rogerio appeared to foul Stewart Downing.

But the home team's penalty appeals fell on deaf ears and any thoughts that Boro might take charge of the game proved unfounded.

Boro squandered possession too easily, while the Portuguese side worked space superbly with slick passing and soon had the home team scrambling.

Viana, on loan from Newcastle, almost played in Douala but his cut-back was just too deep.

The midfielder should have scored after 14 minutes but headed wide from six yards.

Middlesbrough struggled to mount any sustained periods of attack but almost profited from an error by Sporting's erratic goalkeeper Ricardo.

The Portugal international flapped at a cross under pressure from Franck Queudrue and dropped the ball, but with Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink closing fast the keeper managed to flick the ball to safety.

Schwarzer saved a long shot from Douala, while with half-time approaching a fiercely volleyed cross from Downing deflected goalwards off Joseph Enakahire and Ricardo made a sharp save.

But within minutes of the restart Sporting finally created a clear-cut opening, with Barbosa beating Schwarzer from 18 yards.

Douala should have doubled Sporting's lead shortly afterwards after bursting into the area with a late run and connecting with Liedson's cut-back but Schwarzer saved with his legs.

But Sporting did double their lead when Liedson, unmarked at the far post, connected with Douala's cross and headed the ball past the desperate Schwarzer.

Boudewijn Zenden nearly pulled one back but, under pressure from Fabio Rochemback, could not keep his shot on target from 12 yards.

And Boro's evening took a further turn from the worse when Schwarzer could not hold Viana's 25-yard drive, with Douala eventually scoring from six yards.

But the home team's refusal to give up paid dividends when Job acrobatically volleyed Zenden's free-kick past Ricardo to give his team a lifeline.

And Steve McClaren's team further altered the complexion of the tie when Riggott scored from 12 yards after Ricardo failed to hold an optimistic punt up-field from Gareth Southgate.
