Cameroon: First Lady's mother makes political declaration
Ahead of the July elections in Cameroon, the mother of the country’s First Lady has declared her interest in the Bangou mayoralty in the Western region.
Mrs Rosette Bouchouang, who is the mother of President Paul Biya’s wife Chantal, has become the subject of keen interest in the Western region.
A relative unknown political quantity before she was brought to the limelight by area parliamentary representative Theodore Datouo, the First Lady’s mother originates from the Eastern Region of Cameroon while she is actually from the Western region.
She was relocated from the East since it was felt she would use her influence with the First Couple to bring development to the region.
She had Chantal with a Frenchman but eventually married to a Cameroonioan.
Vetting
The Eastern region’s expectations of development projects via Mrs Bouchouang have not, however, materialised. Locals say whatever has been achieved has been through the efforts of the area municipal council.
Still, her political mentor, Mr Datouo, has publicly declared: “We are not in the process of searching for another Mayor. She (Mrs. Bouchouang) is our Mayor and will remain Mayor.
Mr Datouo may not be championing the First Lady’s mother’s campaign for nothing. It is common knowledge that all candidatures for elective office in the ruling CPDM party are vetted by President Biya, the party leader.
