The ways of national team selections are not as logical as people want us to believe…
Ghana’s goalkeeper Richard Kingson was the only player to compete in all of Ghana’s 12 qualifying matches en route to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. But he was merely the 3rd and usually the 4th choice keeper at Wigan Athletic in England where he wasn’t even used for the reserves.
But his irregular club football has not stopped him from delivering for Ghana. He captained an injury-hit, and inexperienced side, at the 2010 CAF Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola, where for a second successive continental championship he was named among the best goalkeepers while Cameroon and it's Espanyol 1st choice goalie were booted out at the 1/4 finals after conceding 8 goals in 4 matches. Kingson, again, led Ghan to the 1/4 finals of the World Cup (while the likes of Souleymanou, Lloris, Mark Schwarzer, etc were bundled out of the group phase)...
What of Stephen Appiah? We all saw him playing for Ghana ahead of Souley Muntari, a regular at Inter Milan (Italian League, Italian Cup, UEFA Champions League winners), who was either left out of the squad or on the bench! Appiah had barely played club football and was only nominally a player of Bologna. Was Rajevac logical or not?why Appiah was in the squad?
Today, Laurent Blanc is not selecting Jeremi Toulalan - who is more experienced and equally (if not more) talented in the role of holding midfielder for France in relation to M'Vila, Lassana Diarra or the other Diarra...Blanc says there is a new spirit that is growing in the France squad, although the same Blanc was complaining a few months ago that his team was inexperienced...
Yes... The national team is meant for the "best" players of any given country. However, there are always incongruities regarding the make up of teams...Because, picking a team is more than just adding up the best of the best... It is also the quest of the best technical, tactical and psychological squad balance.
As fans and observers, it is our right to criticise and ask for explanations for perceived “madness†in team selection...But let's not believe that only our points of view are right.
Besides, why should we want to hang over things we cannot control? I suggest that next time there's an opening for Cameroon’s coaching job, let those who bore us sick on the Toli with their superior knowledge, please apply for the position. Otherwise, let’s stop being a nuisance on internet forums with expertise that we’ve not even tested at Deux
