I went back and looked at a few games from Song last year in similar circumstances (home match against a tough, scrappy opponent), and the disparity between his positioning and offensive aggressiveness is staggering. Song barely scratched the surface of the attacking half last year, but seemed to drift more out of the central zones as his primary function, listing around all areas of the defensive half. This year, he seems committed to the midfield, to being a Gandalf on the bridge saying “You shall not pass!” to opposing midfielders (nerd), but he’s also exploring the attacking side of his game. He’s incredibly strong on the ball and has a good eye for forward-thinking passes, and being that “keymaster” in the counter-attack is going to make him indispensible.
One of the reasons I was so excited about Emmanuel Frimpong this summer was because he was a multi-dimensional midfielder, solid defensively but antagonistic in attack. I’m equally as excited now that Song has found that extra layer to his game. He just may be the most important player to wear the Arsenal shirt.
