UNICEF appoints Barcelona's Eto'o as ambassador
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Friday appointed Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o of Spanish soccer club Barcelona as its ambassador.
The official appointment will take effect on May 27 at the Economic Social Council of Madrid, said UNICEF in a communique.
Eto'o "is very aware about the social reality of the country both in his country and in his continent," said the head of the UNICEF program in Catalonia, Nieves Prieto.
The striker has the profile of an athlete who has shown sensibility towards children and humanitarian causes, said UNICEF.
Eto'o will share the UNICEF honors with Spanish Formula 1 pilot Fernando Alonso.
UNICEF praised the sensibility of the player, who comes from Cameroon, a country affected by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), hunger and other calamities.
Eto'o participated during a week in the production of five publicity spots as part of the campaign "Sport for Development."
The player said "helping people in Cameroon is an additional motivation, as what I do is for the whole world."
