Egypt sack Tardelli

The Egypt Football Association (EFA) have decided to sack their Italian coach Marco Tardelli.

Tardelli and his assistant Giuseppe Giannini have both lost their jobs following Egypt's 2-1 loss to Libya in Tripoli on Friday.

The result in Libya leaves Egypt in fourth place in Group Three with seven points from five matches.

Ahead of them are the Ivory Coast on 12 points, Libya with ten and Cameroon, who have eight.

Earlier in the day Tardelli had said that he would not quit, claiming that the Pharaohs could still reach the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

"It's a tough group and we still have five matches to play," he said.

"Sudan drew with Cameroon on Sunday, this group will be full of surprises.

"We played good football and deserved more from this match," the Italian said.

"I'm on contract until the Nations Cup which Egypt will host in 2006, I intend to respect my contract and keep my job," he said.

Under that contract, the EFA will have to pay the Italian US $90,000 of which the association will pay US $25,000 while the rest will come from businessmen.

According to EFA president, Essam Abdel Moneim, a new coach will only be appointed after a new executive board has been elected next December.
