Drogba to miss Benin clash

Didier Drogba
Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

Didier Drogba will miss the Ivory Coast's 2006 World Cup and Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin on 10 October through injury.

Africa's most expensive player sustained a stomach muscle injury while playing for his English Premiership side Chelsea against Liverpool on Sunday, and limped off after 38 minutes.

"He'll be out for a few weeks," Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho confirmed after his side's 1-0 win.

"He will not be able to join his national team."

Drogba had been expected to join up with the Ivory Coast squad after the Premiership match and his absence will be a blow for Ivory Coast boss Henri Michel, whose side currently top Group Three.

The muscular forward has scored three of the Elephants' nine qualifying goals so far, and his partnership with Aruna Dindane, of Belgian champions Anderlecht, has caused problems for opposition defences.

The Ivory Coast lead their group with nine points, two clear of Egypt, Cameroon and Libya.

Benin, who are second-bottom in Group Three with just two points, are still seeking their first win after four games.
Merci de patienter...
