Young Schalke defender Joel Matip has told the DFB (German Football Association) that he will not represent Germany at international level. The 18-year-old has instead chosen to play for Cameroon.
Matip made his official debut for Cameroon in the international friendly against Italy last week, but still has the option to switch allegiances and play for Germany due to the match having been a friendly.
"The match against Italy was only a friendly match, so I could still decide to play for Germany. However, I have made my decision and will not switch allegiances," Matip was quoted as saying by Bild.
"It was a very difficult decision to make and I have given it a lot of thoughts. In the end, I decided to listen to my heart. I feel like I have made the right choice to play for Cameroon."
The Schalke starlet was born and raised in Germany, but has a Cameroonian father. Matip turned down an invitation to play at the African Nations Cup, but has now set his sights on playing at the World Cup.
