Chelsea boss Mourinho's new deal still only 3 years
tribalfootball.com - April 7, 2005
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho's new £100,000-a-week contract offer does not include an extension in duration.
The Guardian says the deal will 'only' improve Mourinho's salary to £5.2 million - eclipsing the best paid player at Chelsea, Frank Lampard's £5 million-a-year deal.
Chelsea's chief executive Peter Kenyon had indicated at last month's Champions League quarter-final draw in Nyon that he wanted his European Cup-winning manager to remain with the club in the long term and that contract talks would be opened in the close season.
However, reportedly it does not alter the duration of his existing agreement, which has three years to run.
Mourinho is thought to have exaggerated the threat of quitting over the lack of support he received in his battle with UEFA; none the less, Chelsea, who last night refused to confirm that the deal had been agreed, will be worried that this is not the last time Mourinho will exercise brinkmanship in his attempts to impose a tighter rein on the club.
