FUJIYOSHIDA, Japan – Cameroon’s star striker Samuel Eto’o Saturday hit back at his critics back home saying he was comfortable with his performances at the World Cup finals.
The Spanish-based 21-year-old, who scored in the 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Thursday, has been heavily criticised by press and fans at home for being too selfish and missing too many chances.
« I am glad that some people think I am the best striker in the Indomitable Lions’ team, » the Real Mallorca striker said.
« However, if the population of Cameroon are not happy with my performances, I can’t help that.
« If they don’t accept me then that’s their business, but it is a shame that they don’t recognise all the work I have done.
« I think they have failed to note I was elected player of the side in both the previous matches (he created Patrick Mboma’s goal in the draw against Ireland), » he added.
Cameroon need to beat Germany – who are also on four points and lead the African champions on goal difference – to progress to the second round as group winners where they will meet the runners-up of Group B, either South Africa or Paraguay.
A draw with Germany would probably not be enough for Cameroon as Ireland, who are on two points, have to beat tailenders Saudi Arabia by a two-goal margin to ensure they finish runners-up and would head the Olympic champions on goal difference.
