WOME: "LIFE GOES ON..."
Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:48:55
[FOTO Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:48:55] APPIANO GENTILE - Part four of Pierre Wome's news conference:
What will you say to Eto'o when you speak to him?
"I think it's better to meet a person rather than hear from them. I wrote him a message saying that I would consider true the things that appeared in the papers if he didn't reply. He hasn't called me, so..."
Did you think your life was in danger?
"Yes, I did. Was I scared of dying? Personally, no, because I have a tough character. I was worried about my relatives who are in Cameroon. I was in a place you couldn't get in or out of. My relatives have been through some bad moments."
If you could, would you take that penalty again?
"Yes, I certainly would, and I would even do it if it happened in an Inter match with my team-mates who have faith in me."
Have you spoken to the Inter managers?
"Yes, they have all called me."
What did Massimo Moratti say to you?
"That life goes on and that you have to know how to react."

WOME: "TOO EASY TO TALK AFTERWARDS"
Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:40:16
[FOTO Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:40:16] APPIANO GENTILE - Part three of Pierre Wome's news conference:
What happened in the moments before you took the penalty?
"No one spoke. Some of my team-mates had even taken their shirts off, saying that the match was over, but there were still a few minutes to play. I really can't understand how Eto'o got to Barcelona and said the things written in the papers. I have tried to call him right up to this moment. I play at left-back, and to get up to take a penalty I need to cross the pitch and you need time... However, I don't want to be controversial. Once again, I'm disappointed about what Eto'o said. If he won't take responsibility then so be it, but no one wanted to take that penalty."
Will you play for your national team again?
"I'll think about it. For now I'm just going to concentrate on where I am now. All the rest isn't important because I have seen many other similar, if not, worse situations. Where? Always in Cameroon."
What did the fans destroy?
"I don't know how much material damage they did. The most important thing is my family's health and mine. We're all fine and this is the only important thing."
Do you think the behaviour of Eto'o and maybe other national team-mates caused the fans to behave in a certain way?
"The fans know what Eto'o said. But it was obvious that whoever took that penalty and missed like I did would have been faced with the same reaction from the fans. Like I have already said many times, I cannot understand why my team-mate said those things. It's always too easy to talk afterwards. Was I one of our penalty-takers? Yes. Me, Eto'o and Chelsea player Geremie, but he was disqualified."

WOME: "ETO'O DIDN'T TELL THE TRUTH"
Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:24:34
[FOTO Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:24:34] APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Pierre Wome's news conference:
Can you tell us what happened in the moments after you took the penalty?
"I knew it would be tough if I had missed. Apart from my own personal regret, I think about what happened in the whole of Cameroon. I also think of my relatives who live there. I thought about them a lot and before going back to the dressing room at the end of the match I asked the police how they were. They told me they would take care of my family's security. The fans have caused some material damage, but the most important thing is that my family is okay."
Do your relatives have round the clock security now?
"Yes, that's right."
Did Wome return to Italy early because he was worried about his safety?
"If I have to admit it, yes."
It really was a tragedy...
"Yes, it really was. Football is important in Cameroon, too important. If everything goes well it's extraordinary. But if it goes badly... Also, we missed out on World Cup qualification at home, and this made the situation worse."
Can you understand the fans' reaction?
"It's incomprehensible because they also destroyed cars and houses they thought were mine, but which weren't actually mine. But what disappoints me most is what one of my team-mates - Samuel Eto'o, said after everything that has happened. I can't accept this. At Sydney 2000 I took the last penalty in the Olympic final. I scored and we became champions. I have taken others in the African Cup. Sometimes I scored, sometimes I didn't, and the fans were happy all the same. I'm really disappointed about what Eto'o said. He's a team-mate and I can't understand why he said certain things. No one wanted to take that penalty, neither him nor our captain. They were on the pitch with me, they know this."
