Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o has been named the 2005 African Player of the Year at the Confederation of African Football's awards ceremony in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

The award means Eto'o becomes the first player to win the trophy three times in a row, having been selected as Africa's best in 2003 and 2004.

The Barcelona forward narrowly beat Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba to the award, with Michel Essien of Ghana the other beaten candidate.

Meanwhile, Nigeria teenager John Mikel Obi won the 2005 Young Player of the Year award.

The 19-year-old midfielder is rewarded for his outstanding displays as Nigeria finished runners-up at last year's World Youth Championship in Holland.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian, Perpetua Nkwocha, was named as last year's African Female Footballer of the Year.

She retains the title which she won for 2004.

In total, seven award winners will be announced at Thursday's ceremony in Abuja's International Conference Centre.

Eto'o was very well dressed this evening wearing a nice gown from northern Cameroon and a simple hat . He wwas almost crying when he was given the standing ovation and handed the trophy by the Nigerian president of the senate.
SHame on Drogba and Essiene who snubbed the occasion. The party is still continuing but Eto and his entourage have to leave to Spain on the special private jet so Eto'o can rest before the game on Saturday with Real Betis and then travel to London to play against Chelsea.
Did you guys watch it . It is still on . Please tune on
