For his second Chelsea game since the African Nations Cup, Didier was unable to prevent his team's home defeat. The Ivorian star was having knee trouble and so was only brought on at half time as a substitute for Hernan Crespo.
Chelsea gave everything they had but eventually lost 2-1 at Stamford Bridge after an intense match full of suspense. Just like the match against Colchester, Didier's team-mates got off to a bad start, losing Del Horno who was sent off after 38 minutes. At half-time, Mourinho decided to reorganise his team by bringing on Didier to replace Crespo. Didier immediately brought physical power and a more offensive presence into the game.
Down to only ten men, Chelsea threw themselves into the fray. Didier created space which Robben and Ferreira almost took advantage of, before Chelsea opened the score-line thanks to an own goal from Motta in the 59th minute. Lampard then hit the post which unfortunately sparked Barcelona into a higher gear.
Despite running all over the pitch and showing off his talent, Didier lacked a bit of luck to increase Chelsea's lead, especially when a superb volley skimmed the cross-bar in the 68th minute. It was the turning point in the match because a few seconds later Didier couldn't stop Ronaldinho's free kick from being deflected into the net by John Terry. At one-all, Barcelona went up one more gear again…
With magnificent bravery in the storm, Chelsea snatched a great opportunity. Gudjohnsen made a pass back to Didier, out wide, who went head on alone toward the young Barça goal-keeper in the 78th minute but Valdez pushed away the Ivorian's strike. A missed one-on-one which had many consequences as Barcelona immediately counter-attacked to take the lead and win the match.
In a spirt of fair play and acknowledging that Barcelona deserved to win, Didier congratulated Samuel Eto’o and told him to watch out for the second-leg at Nou Camp on March 7.

The current voting by officials of the Confederation of African
Football
(CAF) for the African Player of the Year where Eto'o Samuel won by a 2
point margin has left a lot of unanswered questions as to the criteria
of
election.
1) Eto'o was voted by FIFA as the Third World Best Player.
2) He is the top goal scorer in Europe now
3) He has outperformed his closest rival-Drogba throughout the season
in
many criteria.
Yet CAF officials voted on partisan grounds and other nepotic and
social
affiliations with the players rather than performance and this resulted
in
a very small point margin (2points) between Eto'o and Drogba. Meanwhile
if
they took a critical evaluative analysis of the performance of the two
players into consideration, Eto' should have outscored Drogba by more
than
50 points in the election. That is why I feel that Eto'o is the "Most
Undervalued Player" by CAF officials.
Last night in a crucial UEFA match against Chelsea, Eto'o scored a
marvellously fantastic 85th minute goal to give Barcelone the victory.
Meanwhile Drogba entered as a reserved player in the second half and
was
just a passenger in the field.
I hope they reconsider their positions when voting next year.
