Cameroon legend Roger Milla says the present national team could do better than the side he played in which reached the Italia 90 quarter-finals.
In an interview published on the Cameroon FA’s website, Milla said: « The present team is cohesive and compact, with excellent individual players led by a serious and highly competent technical staff.
« I think they are getting better than the 1990 squad but results will always be the key and the players will have to match their class with results in Korea and Japan. »
Milla, Africa’s Player of the Century who celebrates his 50th birthday next month, led Cameroon to the quarter finals of the World Cup and only England striker Gary Lineker’s last gasp penalty denied them an historic semi-final qualification.
But Milla is banking on the present generation of the Indomitable Lions to go all the way.
« The plus for this team is that the players are not only talented, they are ambitious as well, » he added.
« They know they will always be compared with the 1990 feat and I can sense they are ready to lay that record to rest. »
Cameroon are off to the World Cup on the back of Olympic and African Nations Cup triumphs, but they face two formidable group E opponents in Germany and Republic of Ireland.
