Let’s talk Tactics

Camfoot

As we all know there are almost 16 million coaches in Cameroon right now :), so we thought it would be a good thing to talk about our national team tactics and with important qualification matches around the corner, the timing is right too. Your own ideas and comments on this topic are very much welcome, and this paper only reflects my humble vision and is, in no way, reflecting Camfoot’s position.

Le 14 mai 2012

Following the news about Overtoom joining the ranks of the indomitable lions, the question that rises immediately is where will he fit in. The current roster of the team is pretty much based on very young players trying to play their trade and achieve something. The success of Choupo Moting could serve a great source of motivation for the young lad, but that success is mostly based on his great versatility as he can play on either wing, supporting striker, main striker and even behind a lone striker and it’s from that kind of area between the opponent’s defence and midfield that he scored the vital winning goal against Capo-Verde after a tremendous solo run, highlighting his great technical abilities and composure in the process.

Now that we have another technically gifted young player modelled in a very highly rated dutch football’s system, the coaching staff should find a system that would allow both of them to blossom and put the lions back in the place where they belong.

In the past couple of years, one of the most successful playing system features a double anchor in the midfield, a great ball handler and passer in front of them, with two flying wingers and a lethal striker. That is the system that allowed Inter to win champions leaguein 2010, Bayern and Chelsea to be this year’s contenders, Germany to trash England in the world cup’s quarter final, Holland to reach the final and Spain to eventually win it.

So let look at how the last two teams lined up and how we could apply that system to the lions based on player currently available.

World Cup Final 2010

Netherlands

Stekelenburg
Van Der Viel Heitinga Mathijsen Van Bronckhost
Van Bommel De Jong
Kuyt Sneijder Robben
Van Persie

Spain

Casillas
Ramos Pique Puyol CapdeVilla
Busquets Alonso
Pedro Xavi Iniesta
Villa

These are the final’s lineups of the most important football’s tournament in the world ; the fact that both team opted for the same system shows how good it is, the match eventually went to extra time, thus emphasizing how even and balanced teams were.

Now let’s look how we could project it to the lions. Again, this is just an example and for debate purposes. There is no intend to dictate anything to the coaching staff nor to point that the listed players should even get a call up and/or start the next match.

Ndy Assembe
Nyom Nkoulou* or Mbia Chedjou Assou-Ekotto
Song Enoh
Aboubakar Overtoom Choupo-Moting
Eto’o* or Kweukeu

* Injured

** Suspended

The good about this system is that it’s almost impossible to “park the bus” against. It features 4 attack minded players almost guarantying isolation in one on one situation, which creative players with a lot of trickery will relish.

One of lions biggest dilemma is that we have a bunch of good ball winners and defensive midfielders (Matip, Song, Enoh, Mbia, Nguemo even Nkoulou and Chedjou could play there). The coaches have tried to play with three of them in the middle of the park but that allowed the opposition to just seat back and invite the lions to try and break them if they could. With limited creativity in midfield, lions couldn’t create enough chances.

The qualifying phase of the previous ACN is a very good illustration of that, we were eliminated but conceded only two goals in 4 matches against Senegal and DRC and scored a mere two.

Barcelona is the only successful club nowadays that almost never field that formation. One or two reasons is La Masia (Barcelona’s Youth Academy) where most of their players graduated, the other one, perhaps the most important is Lionel Messi, who can go dribble pass players and score. But his struggles while playing for Argentina shows that the right system is fundamental to get the best of any player, the best player on earth included. So let’s hope that our coaching stuff will find what fits the players available to him and allow all of us to cheer and be proud of the indomitable lions.

    ASSEMBE

    NYOM Matip - chedjou Bedimo

    Alex - Nguemo

    sally overtoom Moukandjo

    choupo

    ASSEMBE--------------------------

    NYOM----------------KANA----------CHEDJOU-------------ASSOU

    SONG-------------------NGUEMO---------------

    CHOUPO-------------------OVERTOOM---------------MOUKOUANDJO

    ETO’O---------------------------

A mon avis Matip-Kana ; Mbia-Nkoulou ; Chedjou-Nkoulou ; Nkoulou-Kana me paraissent plus faisable.

En plus en 4-4-2 losagne, je crois qu’on aura les éléments suffisant pour créer le jeu...

Well I think the 4-2-3-1 formation u proposed is actually a very defensive tactic ; it is widely used coz of how successful Mourinho was with it at Inter. B4 tha, not many tacticians used it. In any case, the problem I personally find with it is, we don’t have the wingers to deploy such a tactic. Look at the teams that used it very successfully the past few years ; u’d notice extreme talent & off-ball workaholics on the lines.Players who bot only have the talent to slide in when needed, but have the discipline to hold their position & cover the full backs. Personally I’d play a 3-5-2 or a diamond 4-4-2. Something like this :
    4-4-2
    ***********Kameni**************
    Nyom****M’bia***N’kolou****Assou

    ***********Matip***************
    *****Song*********N’guemo******
    ***********Overtoom/Salli******

    *******Choupo*****Eto’o/Abou***

Notice that in this, Song is being used as a CM as opposed to a DM. In that position he can help with ball distribution and cover Nyom (whom I don’t really trust yet) At CB, if fit, the best pair should be Mbia & Nkoulou. They compliment each other. Should 1 or both be injured, then that should completely change to Biyick & possibly Bassong or Chedjou. At forefront, u have 3 very mobile players in Willie, Choupo & Eto’o. U can throw in Salli. Considering how hardworking Nguemo is on the pitch, we wouldn’t be worried about Overtoom not falling back to defend (I have watched him at Heracles & he doesn’t like defending). Bedimo at LB should BAE be unavailable. Abou at CF alongside Choupo should ETo’o be unavailable or even Salli. He had a great run of games with ASM (until injured once Simone moved him to a CF position as oppposed to a winger)
Oh & yeah still think Kameni is the besst gk we have (not great but the best we have)

3-5-2 (which should be the best in my view)
    *********Kameni**************

    ****Nkoulou**Matip**M’bia***

    Nyom*********************BAE
    ************Song************
    ******Salli***Overtoom******

    ******Eto’o*****Choupo******

In many ways, u a playing for most of the game in what looks like a 5-3-2 : so in other words u are relying heavily on core full backs to provide width in offensive situations & drop in to cover up in a defensive 6 when under pressure. Wins games, albeit by very very tight margins (remember Winfred Schaeffer ? That is how he got us that ACN 2002 title !)
Well just my point of view. All left to the technical bench to come up with the most suitable formation to use.

encorelui, 3-5-2 , it’s the tactics we used to win the ACN in 2002, but back then, the difference between our top players and the rest of africa’s player was very big so we were successful, now even Kenya has a player in the champions league, look at Zambia winning the ACN and Senegal not even winning a match, now national teams are fairly even. The Initial system of Mourinho was with 3 central midfielders, but he couldn’t apply it in Inter that’s why he changed it, the main purpose of the system proposed is to confuse opponent’s defence about who should mark who and knowing the problem african’s defences have with tactical discipline... I agree we should use 3-5-2 against europeans/south-americans.

How can you say the system is defesive if real madrid used it to break the record of points in this la liga season (100 points !!!!) scoring bunch of goals. CR7 scored 46 as a winger, Higuain and Benzema scored almost 50 goals between them in the league alone...

    • Le 14 mai 2012 à 17:41, par Encorelui En réponse à : Let’s talk Tactics

It was designed to be a defensive tactic. Watch RM play against more robust opponents (Barca, Bayern)... what do u notice : counter-offensive. Even Bayern... watch their games in the Bundesliga using the 4-2-3-1. It is overtly reliant on fast counter moves, as opposed to say a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 (diamond) that relies more on creativity & breaking down your opponent in the middle. That is what that specific tactical layout gives u. Basically you double up on the wings & shut down in the middle of the park. In other words u are fine in conceding possession to ur opponent & hitting them on the slightest break u get. I am not saying it is a bad tactic, it is very efficient, but we just don’t have the players to use it. Apart from Eto’o & Choupo, what other forwards do we have that can play on the line & double down on their respective full backs ? Abou can play on the line, but not if u depend on him to drop back & fight for possession. At least that is how I c it.

Do you think Germany played england in the counter when they trashed them in the WC Quarter Finals ? I don’t think Inter can rely on counters when they play against Catania nor RM against Zaragoza. My point is that the creative midfielder in the center of this formation is a real focal point that will free the wingers, remember who played on the right for Inter, Zantti, Stankovic, Biabiani even Balotelli played there, it doesn’t really matter as long as everybody keeps the shape on the field. Look how good creative players expressed themselves with that system : Ozil, 37 assists in 2 years in La liga, best in the league 2 years in a row (20 in 2011 and 17 in 2011), even Xavi and iniesta couldn’t match it, Snejder at inter, Juan Mata at chelsea, Diego at Atletico madrid, Rooney at MU, In fact Rooney had his best scoring campaign(27 goals) this term playing that role behind the lone striker. I think this system is a more balanced transformation of the famous Dutch/Brazil 4-2-4 of total football.

I like @encorelui’s tactical proposals more than the journalists for two reasons : Nguemo is way better than Enoh and we don’t have the flying wingers.

I digress on Kameni because if even better, then when should the rebuilding start if not now ? And Willie as well as Nyom still to prove their worth.

    Just an opinion.
